Awakening Wonder Through the Art of Leonardo da Vinci: A Picture Study

Welcome to a place where we explore the beauty of our Catholic heritage through art, story, and hands-on activities. Today, we’re stepping into the genius of Leonardo da Vinci—painter, scientist, inventor, and seeker of truth. His artistic gifts offer a unique window into both divine mystery and human beauty. This unit is one of ten I planned and used with my son last year for our picture study lessons. Whether you’re a homeschooling parent, a Sunday school teacher, or simply someone who loves sacred art, this picture study will guide you in discovering God’s presence in the detail, harmony, and imagination of Leonardo’s works.

Why Study Leonardo da Vinci?

Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) was a man of deep curiosity and awe, blending artistic mastery with scientific observation. Studying his sacred works invites children to see how reason and reverence go hand in hand. Through his paintings, they can explore:

  • Divine Detail: The use of light, shadow, and human emotion to reveal spiritual truth

  • Art & Inquiry: How observation of nature enriches our understanding of faith

  • Sacred Stories: Gospel events portrayed with tenderness, symbolism, and insight

The Four Key Works

Below are four masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci. Each link leads to a high-resolution, public-domain image you can download and print for your family’s picture study.
